The Challenges
Our customer in Des Moines, IA, contacted our Starlink installation SMEs with specific connectivity challenges:
- The business was operating with a 4G LTE cellular network hotspot as its primary internet source, which is slower and unreliable for the increasing demands of their business.
- Limited bandwidth, inconsistent signal strength, and poor support for simultaneous device usage within their office environment.
- Starlink would be the primary connection, while the LTE hotspot may be kept as a backup connection. Starlink will be integrated into their network.
Planning and Assessment
We performed an initial offsite assessment to determine the technical feasibility of the site for Starlink installation. We initiated the process with a detailed review of the property’s satellite imagery to better understand the site’s layout, scale, and potential installation challenges. To supplement this, we requested on-site photos, which provided critical context for areas not visible from above.
We also conducted a roof assessment, considering the material, pitch, and overall structural condition. Additionally, we identified potential obstructions—such as surrounding trees or adjacent buildings—that could interfere with optimal signal reception.
This preliminary assessment was critical in identifying site-specific constraints early in the planning phase. It enabled precise estimation of the required materials, specialized equipment, and personnel needed for deployment. This forward-looking approach allowed us to anticipate and mitigate logistical complexities, ensuring that the installation schedule and resource planning were optimized for the property’s structural and environmental conditions.
Result of Initial Offsite Assessment:
- Property: Condo-style Commercial Building
- Roof Type: Metal
- Starlink equipment: Starlink Standard kit
- Mount option: Pipe adapter mount
- 2 of the 6 units in that building at the west end of the building will be the preferred installation point
- The building’s height to access the roof is about 20ft.. No lift is available onsite.
- The company uses a 4G LTE Cellular Network hotspot, which may remain in place as a backup/failover network. Starlink will be the primary ISP.
- The data closet was not yet set up at the time of our consultation
Our Solution
To address business connectivity requirements, our Starlink SME recommends the following solution:
- Equipment Recommendation: Since the client had not ordered Starlink yet, we reviewed their layout and recommended the Standard Starlink Kit.
- Installation Point:
- Need a Lift: Since no lift is available on site, we arranged a one-day rental of a 30′ Articulating Boom Lift.
- Mounting Strategy: Pivot Mount attached to a bracket for secure and stable placement.
Starlink Installation Process
Our Starlink installers began the installation process by conducting the Starlink obstruction test to verify the optimal installation location.
Once verified with a “Good experience” rating, the Starlink dish was mounted using a pivot mount attached to a bracket.
The Starlink cable ran under the soffit or gutter toward the entry point into the building, where the indoor Gen3 WiFI Mesh router was located. It was neatly secured with metal or plastic UV-resistant clips and the entry point was sealed with silicone sealant to avoid water intrusion.
The Starlink cable is then connected to the Gen3 WiFi Mesh router. Power on the router and activate it using the Starlink app. The Starlink was integrated with the client’s existing network.
A CAT6 cable was run from the exterior demarcation point (where Starlink enters the building) to the internal patch panel and switch to integrate Starlink’s internet with the existing network rack. It follows professional low-voltage cabling standards, including proper RJ45 termination.
Starlink Installation Results & Performance
After the installation, our team performed a Starlink Alignment Test to ensure the dish was in the best possible position for continuous satellite connectivity. The process included carefully assessing the dish’s position, considering the elevation angle, azimuth direction and potential obstructions.
With the Starlink system fully installed, we evaluated its real-world performance using the Starlink Speed Test.
This Starlink speed test result shows:
- Download Speed: 346 Mbps – This is an excellent speed, well above the typical range for Starlink (which can vary from 50-250 Mbps). It indicates strong satellite connectivity and an optimal installation setup.
- Upload Speed: 31 Mbps—This is a solid upload speed suitable for video calls, cloud backups, and remote work.
- Latency (Ping): 26 ms – This is a good latency for Starlink. It is excellent for most online activities, including gaming and video conferencing.
Note: Starlink systems typically peak performance after 12 hours of calibration with the satellite network.
