Connecting Starlink to the People of Planet Earth
Finding a clear view of the sky and dealing with obstructions can be quite challenging when performing Starlink installation services in NorCal, especially in areas with lots of (tall) trees, foliage, nearby buildings, awkward roof structures, poles, wires and other obstacles that can interfere with the connection between Starlink antennas/dishes and the Starlink LEO satellite constellation.
Finding the right spot with a clear and unobstructed view of the sky can take some trial and error and sometimes additional mounting, safety equipment and sometimes even a lift to reach an optimal obstruction-free location. This is a real-world example of a recent Starlink installation services request we received from a residential customer in Shingletown, CA.
Our Starlink installation SMEs received a service request from a homeowner in Shingletown, CA. We conducted an initial offsite assessment using satellite map views, customer-provided photos, and gathered installation requirements. The evaluation revealed that a long pole mount either in the yard near the home, behind the property, or positioned high on the rooftop. It would provide the best line of sight, as the building is surrounded by tall trees that could obstruct the signal.
We conducted multiple Starlink obstruction tests at the location of the old dish, including higher elevations to assess whether extending the existing pole after removing the old dish would help. Unfortunately, every test failed. With Starlink installations, you can always go higher after all, the sky is literally the limit.
This approach would require labor-intensive manual trenching and the use of PVC or other conduit to route the Starlink cable from the building to the long pole. The dish would then be mounted on a 10-foot galvanized pole secured with a Standard Pipe Adapter mount.
Given that the house and the desired outdoor coverage area exceeded 4,500 sq. ft., we recommended the customer purchase two additional Starlink Gen3 WiFi Mesh Routers, a Standard Pipe Adapter Mount, and a 45-meter (147 ft) Starlink proprietary cable from the Starlink Shop
We submitted the proposal for review and approval of the customer. Once approved and the equipment arrived onsite, we coordinated the schedule with our professional Starlink Installers in Shingletown, CA.
At the scheduled time, our Starlink installer arrived onsite and performed the multiple Starlink obstructions test to spot the best location for installing the Starlink.
This was the best obstructions test we could receive, and it was taken from the highest point at the center of the rooftop.
During the onsite visit, we determined that the long pole mount was not feasible due to poor obstruction test results (significantly worse than the example shown above). Instead, we recommended a ridgeline mount to secure the Starlink dish at the highest point of the roof for optimal signal.
This location offered the fewest obstructions and a relatively clear view of the sky. The customer also planned to trim the surrounding trees, further reducing potential interference and ensuring better connectivity.
Then, they routed the 45-meter Starlink cable from the roof to the indoor location of the primary Starlink Gen3 WiFi mesh router, sealed the cable entry point and used a cable drip loop to prevent water ingress.
The Starlink Gen 3 WiFi mesh router installation enhances the WiFi network range and stability of the Starlink network throughout the home residential home including outdoor area by creating a mesh system that connects multiple routers.

A Starlink alignment test is done to ensure that the Starlink dish is optimally positioned to maintain a strong connection with the satellite.
Finally, the Starlink speed test is done to measure the performance of the Starlink connection by providing key metrics like download speed, upload speed, and latency. And look what we’ve got!
A successful Starlink Installation in a rural or remote area like Shingletown gives the resident access to high-speed internet to support streaming, video conferencing, remote work and online gaming. Starlink uses Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, which are lower in latency and more consistent in performance. This is valuable in areas where traditional broadband infrastructure is unreliable or unavailable.
